Newsletter Issue No. 8 September 2011

President's Message

Maxine Goulding Greetings Everyone!

I attended the Women's Business Conference 2011 - Your Time is NOW in San Diego. It was a very educational and wonderful networking event. The two-day conference started off with a networking luncheon, several round table discussions with experts, interactive workshops and raffle giveaways. There was a Media Corner, Chapter Best Practice Roundtable discussions and a wonderful reception "Taste of California Sparkling Reception" hosted by NAWBO-CA. In addition, NAWBO-CA had the honor of presenting the Women Business Owner of the Year award to Laura Neubauer, Founder & CEO, Deliver-It, Inc.

The Exhibit Hall held many exhibitors. I was exceptionally pleased when I saw one of our NAWBO-SV members display her products at the conference. It was our very own Membership Director, Catherine Potieger of MsBellezza Jewelry. This is a perfect example of our members recognizing opportunities to showcase their products/services. Excellent business move!

Another highlight of my trip was meeting the incoming CEO/President of NAWBO National, Diane Tomb. She is very gracious, understands the life of a business owner and was excited to hear about what NAWBO-SV is doing to bring member value to the Chapter.

The top three reasons for attending conferences is to expand your business networks, increase your knowledge base and develop new contacts. Developing relationships wherever you go is key to your business.

If you are thinking about attending the next Women's Business Conference, it will be held in Louisville, Kentucky - October 4-5, 2012. Mark your calendars!

Cheers,
Maxine M. Goulding
President - NAWBO Silicon Valley

Updates from the New Board of Directors

Great Info!

The NAWBO-SV Board wanted to pass along the recent speech by President Obama, which offers hope for job creation and boosting the economy. The information below was taken from the White House website. Click Here for the full speech.

AMERICAN JOBS ACT

To create more jobs now, the President is sending Congress the American Jobs Act - a set of ideas supported by both Democrats and Republicans that Congress must pass right away. The purpose of the American Jobs Act is simple: put more people back to work and put more money in the pockets of working Americans. Here's how:

  • First, it provides a tax cut for small businesses, not big corporations, to help them hire and expand now, and provides an additional tax cut to any business that hires or increases wages.
  • Second, it puts more people back to work, including up to 280,000 teachers laid off by state-budget cuts, first responders and veterans coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan, and construction workers repairing crumbling bridges, roads and more than 35,000 public schools, with projects chosen by need and impact, not earmarks and politics. And, it expands job opportunities for hundreds of thousands of low-income youth and adults through a new Pathways Back to Work Fund that supports summer and year round jobs for youth; innovative new job training programs to connect low-income workers to jobs quickly; and successful programs to encourage employers to bring on disadvantaged workers.
  • Third, it helps out-of-work Americans by extending unemployment benefits to help them support their families while looking for work and reforming the system with training programs that build real skills, connect to real jobs and help the long-term unemployed. It bans employers from discriminating against the unemployed when hiring, and provides a new tax credit to employers hiring workers who have been out of a job for over 6 months.
  • Fourth, it puts more money in the pockets of working and middle class Americans by cutting in half the payroll tax that comes out of every worker's paycheck, saving families an average of $1,500 a year' and taking executive action to remove the barriers that exist in the current federal refinancing program (HARP) to help more Americans refinance their mortgages at historically low rates, save money and stay in their homes.
  • Last, the plan won't add a dime to the deficit and is fully paid for through a balanced deficit reduction plan that includes closing corporate tax loopholes and asking the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share.

Health & Wellness

By Sooji Rugh, M.D., Health & Wellness Director

Get Unplugged & Grow Younger!

#"Unplugging" during the workday is critical to productivity, how you interact with people, your problem-solving abilities, health and wellness, and your overall enjoyment of the day. It is also critical to how you age - or don't. That's because chronic stress will age you - no kidding!

According to Hans Selye, author of The Nature of Stress and a stress pioneer, "...stress is not a vague concept, somehow related to the decline in the influence of traditional codes of behavior, dissatisfaction with the world, or the rising cost of living, but rather...it is clearly a definable biological and medical phenomenon whose mechanisms can be objectively identified and...we can cope much better once we know how to handle it."

Chronic stress can rob us of feeling balanced and, eventually, our youth. As I say frequently, "We can't run from the tiger AND have sex!" Our biochemicals just don't work that way. In fact, if we're running from the tiger, we can't even digest our lunch! And as you well know, it often feels like we're running from the tiger all day every day.

Here are some modern-day examples of "running from the tiger" that keep our stress hormones elevated and our sex and digestion processes in standby mode:

  • Late for an appointment (or anything)
  • Coffee only for breakfast
  • Too much "doing"
  • Traffic
  • Rushed "not enough time in the day..."
  • Relationships that are toxic
  • Alcohol, nicotine and toxic chemical laden foods

You get the picture...

Chronic stress can cause:

  • Brain fog - no, it's not just because you're getting older
  • Extra wrinkles
  • Lack of motivation
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Obesity
  • Poor short-term memory
  • The inability to problem solve effectively
  • Chronic disease such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.

Some of these symptoms of chronic stress can really affect your effectiveness on the job.

Here are my five secrets to keeping your health, sanity and increasing your on-the-job effectiveness all at the same time (and still have some libido left!)

Secret #1: Take regular breaks - play a rockin' tune on your iPod and dance like crazy for 3 minutes or go outside to breathe in some fresh air.

Secret #2 Take 3 deep breaths (to the count of 6 on the inhale and exhale), while you think of something/someone you love

Secret #3 Eat a healthy protein, fat and vegetable or fruit within an hour of waking, and at least every five hours to keep blood sugar balanced.

Secret #4 Sleep - get at least 8 hours nightly - it's the #1 stress buster!

Secret #5 Call someone you love, or take your dog to work. Follow these simple secrets and you will end your day happy with fewer wrinkles!
